Overview
When metastatic colorectal cancer progresses after initial chemotherapy, effective treatment options become limited. While the landmark SUNLIGHT clinical trial demonstrated that adding the targeted drug bevacizumab to trifluridine-tipiracil (FTD/TPI) improved survival compared to FTD/TPI alone, assessing these benefits in everyday clinical practice is crucial for understanding the combination’s real-world value.
To evaluate this combination in routine care, researchers analyzed records from 2,391 patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer in the Flatiron Health Research Database. Using statistical weighting to balance patient characteristics, the study revealed that patients receiving FTD/TPI plus bevacizumab lived significantly longer than those receiving FTD/TPI monotherapy (median overall survival of 9.4 months vs. 7.4 months). The combination also significantly extended the time before patients needed a new treatment or passed away (time to next treatment or death of 5.3 vs. 3.7 months).
Why this matters
This study provides real-world evidence supporting that adding bevacizumab to FTD/TPI delivers meaningful survival improvements for patients with pretreated colorectal cancer. These findings reinforce clinical trial results and support the combination as an effective standard of care, helping oncologists make evidence-based decisions for patients facing advanced disease.
